Alpacas for Sale
At Hideaway Wood Farm our focus is on breeding, working with and caring for healthy, happy alpacas in a gentle, respectful and natural way.
Our priority is welfare over income and we seek to ensure the wellbeing of our alpacas (and our people!) in everything we do.
We have a herd of 28 alpacas, many of which were born here on the farm and we know each of our animals individually.
Not only are alpacas peaceful, great fun and very calming to be around, they also help with our land management efforts and produce fantastic manure, which when sun dried and composted we give back to the land to improve our soils. They also produce a yearly harvest of beautiful and high quality fibre with so many uses.
There are so many reasons to keep alpacas. They make wonderful pasture companions (pets), they are light on the soil, they can be wonderfully supportive therapy animals (see our Animal Assisted Interventions page for more on this), you can walk them, meditate with them, produce beautiful, warm, soft products from their fleece and so much more.
Breeding
Many of our foundation herd of alpacas came to us from respected bloodlines and have show winner pedigree - these form our breeding herd. Some were going to be sent off to zoos or needed rehoming and we gladly took them on. They are the best aunties and uncles and we're so glad to have them in our herd. Many of our alpacas are direct descendents of those from South American breeders.
In terms of our focus as breeders, we do not select for particularly desirable traits as we know the trends are always changing and that some traits can end up not being the best for the health of our alpacas.
Instead we breed our animals with a focus on them being healthy, behaviourally well natured and with good conformation that will support their health and longevity.
In recent years we have bred from our 'grey' stud Phineas and Herts Alpacas 'Patch' and welcomed many beautiful patchy, grey and multi cria to our herd.
Handling, Husbandry and Care
We made the transition to CameliDynamics handling and training for our whole herd in late 2024.
This has significantly improved the ease of handling of our herd.
Many of our alpacas are now easily herded, handled, haltered, walk and even enjoy a stroke on the neck with the back of our hands. And those who aren't are on their way there. This is hugely valuable for our working animals who spend time with people on our walks, alpaca related activities and animal assisted interventions and for those who are moving on to new homes where they will be doing similar things.
We also feel this adds real value in terms when we come to sell animals as pasture companions (pets), working animals and therapy animals and even for animals being added to a breeding program it improves efficiency (and enjoyment!) of routine husbandry tasks.
In terms of husbandry and care we are always seeking to incorporate more natural ways of taking care of our alpacas, removing unnecessary chemicals and supporting them through natural treatments and remedies wherever possible.
Wherever possible we give our animals choice and autonomy and respect their unique nature as a prey species as well as their individual personalities.
Alpacas have been domesticated for 6,000 years and have never been wild but they still have many innate behaviours that they enjoy being able to take part in such as grazing, foraging, walking through bracken and long grass to scratch themselves, getting into water and rolling in dust baths.
We do everything we can to offer our alpacas a stimulating and natural environment that allows them to explore their needs and preferences.
Looking to Buy Alpacas
Whether you are completely new to alpacas, looking to build your existing herd, seeking an animal for a specific purpose or simply curious and wanting to come and have a look to see if alpacas are for you, we're happy to give you time, answer your questions and support you in the process.
We know all of our animals individually and can advise in terms of temperaments, breeding, pedigree and history. Our whole herd is BAS registered and we can provide a full medical record.
But more than all of that, we love our animals and love to meet alpaca people.
Please note, alpacas are herd animals and need to live in groups of at least three. We are happy to advise on and support with alpaca keeping and provide ongoing support as part of the sales process.
Many of the alpacas we have for sale may not appear in our sales list below so please do get in touch to organise a visit and come and meet them in person.

Bright, enthusiastic and young at heart. Amelie is 5 going on 2. She is fully grown yet behaves like a yearling, especially when you get the hose out and she's always first to the fence to investigate visitors. We bred her and the result was the absolutely gorgeous and gentle Deva, a true black alpaca with a gentle soul. She's a wonderful mum and a joy to have around. She is, however, very strong and despite being handled with the utmost respect and gentleness still has an aversion to handling. We can conduct her basic health checks (as long as you don't touch her hair when you check her eyes!) but we've taken to giving her vitamins in with her feed because she's not a fan.

An absolutely beautiful alpaca. She used to be one of our hardest to handle but has softened significantly since we’ve been handling her using the more gentle, respectful CameliDynamics techniques. She can be a bit nervy about husbandry tasks and we sometimes have to opt to put her vitamins in her feed but recently we’ve found she’s settled a lot. She’s near the top of the herd hierarchy, always trying to dominate everyone alongside Annie.

A gentle giant Bingo is our emotional support alpaca. Bingo likes to hang over your shoulder whilst you’re in the pen working just to see what’s going on and make sure you’re ok. She also absolutely loves to meet our visitors and has graced many with a sniff on the head. I’ve found she is easier to handle when she knows exactly what it is you’re doing, so I always let her know very clearly with a visual and words and I’ve been able to conduct all of her husbandry tasks solo at 5 ft 4 even though she’s far taller than me.

A stunning alpaca with a beautiful face. I always think she looks camel-like with her long black eyelashes and black markings around her eyes. Billie had her first cria Domino in 2024 and despite a rocky start (she rejected her at first for a few days but took her back before it became a problem) she took to motherhood beautifully and they are still highly bonded. Billie is gentle, graceful and at ease in the herd. She was born with a hyper mobile front knee joint which will probably require a little pain relief (we use willow at the moment and planned to get her some joint support feed this autumn) and care as she ages.

Quick growing toenails, can get a little twisted
One of the special ones. Biscuit is one of our most anxious alpacas but she’s also our most intuitive. Many a blog has been written about biscuit! Despite being nervous she will seek out visitors who need a little TLC. It’s a real treat to get a nose to nose from Biscuit and a symbol of the trust she’s built with us. She’s an anxious eater and will scream and shout at everyone unless there’s plenty of space at the feed troughs and the hay rack. We had to get an extra rack that we now dub ‘Biscuit’s hay rack’ to keep her happy.
She will always, always cush (there was one time she didn’t!) during husbandry tasks and drop her head to the ground. She needs continuous trust building and very gentle handling.

Dancer came out of the womb dancing and still likes to give us the run around. She was a bit of a buckeroo in her early handling days but she’s settling down nicely as she matures. A gorgeous bay black alpaca with a lovely soft fleece. She is quiet and unassuming. She doesn’t get into any trouble in the herd and keeps herself to herself.

Tendency to leap in the air unexpectedly
An absolute character. Ever since she was a cria Domino has gotten excited about an audience. The moment the visitors came through the gate she’d be pelting off round the paddock doing zoomies. As she’s matured she’s not let go of this playful, excitable character trait. She likes to leap in the air and throw herself around whenever she’s excited about anything (we have to take a bit of caution with small children due to this, she’s wonderful with them but this can be a bit problematic). She’s taken beautifully to halter training and probably wouldn’t need a huge amount more to be a good walker if you were looking for that. She loves a stroke on the neck and even has let children cuddle her during visits (never round the neck)! She’s a very very special alpaca and although I’ll miss her hugely if she goes we can’t keep them all!

Our littlest alpaca. She was born to our gentle giant Bingo, the last cria of the year and she’s remained our littlest. She’s often a favourite with our visitors with her very fluffy top knot and lovely little face. Daisy is shy and keeps herself to herself in the herd and she’s quite nervous during handling (she’ll do a lot of walking on the rope before she stands). She’s got a very fluffy top knot and can go fleece blind close to shearing (30th April 2026 this year) so will need a little trim to ensure she can see clearly!

Melisandre is our tiniest adult alpaca but she has always bred beautifully proportioned cria. One of our most prolific alpaca mums Melisandre has consistently produced beautiful cria for us every time she’s been bred. She has a nervous temperament but she handles ok because she’s been doing it so long. She was once herd matriarch but has settled into her retirement and now likes to enjoy baths (she LOVES to get in buckets of water and water troughs but absolutely hates showers) and hang out with her fellow older ladies in the shelter on warm days.
